What it actually costs to print a branded NFC object
A custom 3D-printed object with an embedded NFC tag has roughly four cost components:
- Design: modeling the geometry from a logo or brand reference. One-time cost. Usually $50 to $300 depending on complexity.
- Material: PLA, PETG, ASA, TPU, plus the second-color filament for dual-extrusion branding. About $0.50 to $2.00 per piece for the kind of objects we ship most.
- Print time: anywhere from 25 minutes (small magnet) to 8 hours (large architectural piece). Material cost stays low; the real cost is the printer being occupied.
- NFC tag + mid-print pause: about $0.40 per tag wholesale, plus the labor to pause the print, drop the tag, resume, and verify the embed lines up.
The total cost-to-make for our typical NFC-embedded logo magnet is around $4–$8. The market for similar objects is $30–$50 retail. That spread is where dropshippers live and where the customer pays for nothing.
Why the cheap stuff looks cheap
If you've held a stamped NFC keychain from one of the big online tap-merchandise stores, you've felt this: brittle plastic, blurry single-color logo, no surface finish, visible tool marks. They're injection-molded in bulk overseas and stickered or UV-printed after the fact. The print quality is a margin choice, not a craft constraint.
Our objects are dual-extrusion FDM with surface ironing on the top layers, fillet-finished edges, and color-flushed transitions where two colors meet. That's not exotic technology. It's a Bambu Lab A1 Mini with AMS, the same machine you can buy for $400. The difference is calibration time, slicing skill, and a willingness to throw the bad prints away instead of selling them.
Why we don't anchor-price
Industry standard for NFC-embedded retail product is to list a "$70" original price with a permanent "$35" sale. The strikethrough is fake. Everybody in the category knows it's fake. Customers are starting to know it too.
We charge what something costs to make well. For an NFC-embedded logo magnet (original design, dual-color, surface-finished, NFC programmed and verified) that's $25 to $40 depending on size and quantity. For a fully custom geometry (your shape, not your logo on our shape) it's $80 to $200 starting price. No fake discount math. No $69.99-from-$129.99 dance.
What this enables for clients
Because the actual cost-to-make is low and the design lives in our archive, we can ship every signed Web Studio engagement with a custom NFC-embedded version of the client's logo as a signing bonus. Tap it with a phone, it goes wherever they want: site, WebAR filter, booking page. Ships in week one of the engagement, before the digital work even ends.
That's what you can do when the unit economics are honest. The signing-bonus mechanic isn't a discount, it's just what's possible when the whole operation runs on near-cost.
